After a horrific finish in Hong Kong, Jon Rahm leaves with £3.1 million. Payday for Liv Golf uncertain

The Masters winner Jon Rahm had a horrifying conclusion to his first round at LIV Golf Hong Kong, capping his round with a triple-bogey seven on Friday.

Up until then, the Spaniard’s round had been almost flawless. He had gone through his first 17 holes without making a bogie and had made six birdies, putting him in a great position going into the last round of the day. Rahm then found himself standing on the 18th fairway, playing his fifth, following an incorrect tee shot. However, he made a fantastic approach to give himself a chance to lessen the damage.

The captain of Legion XIII was visibly irritated as he proceeded to miss the double bogey putt, which left him with a seven. This was the sole mistake on what appeared to be an incredible start to the tournament.

Rahm dropped back to three-under par for the competition as a result, trailing Dean Burmester and Abraham Ancer by four strokes. After joining the Saudi-backed competition, the Spaniard has performed admirably, placing no lower than seventh in his first three events.

The former PGA Tour player, however, will undoubtedly be eager to cross the finish line as soon as possible and collect one of LIV’s £13.1 million ($15 million) winners’ checks. Rahm did lead his squad to victory, though, when Legion XIII triumphed in their debut last month in Mexico.

As a result of their triumph in Mexico, Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Kieran Vincent, and Caleb Surratt are presently ranked fourth in the team standings. It goes without saying that these newcomers are determined to continue their winning ways this week. Prior to the tournament, Rahm assessed his team’s chances, saying, “Well, if there’s a way to categorize my squad golf-wise, it would be a team of four solid ball strikers.

On Friday, Jon Rahm shot a three-under-par 67.

“Narrow golf courses are clearly going to be more successful. The greens are in excellent condition, so it should be easy to make putts. In that sense, I believe it plays to our strengths.”

Since making the switch, Rahm seems to have embraced the LIV Golf squad, and the Spaniard naturally has a lot of excitement over his Legion XIII setup. “Like I’ve said many times we’re a young team,” he stated.

“We have two players with a great deal of experience and two who are still growing, and despite not performing at our peak level over the past two weekends, we have managed to finish no worse than fifth thus far.

“It’s the fact that we won our first event and that we’re still in the running even when we’re not playing at our best that, in my opinion, should be the most encouraging thing of all. Before long, each and every one of us will be bursting at the seams, just like they did on Sunday.

“I’m just awaiting the day when it occurs. I’m eager for Caleb and Kieran to demonstrate their true abilities to everyone.”

Rahm is presently tied for 18th place on the individual side of the draw on a condensed leaderboard, while Legion XIII is ranked 10th in the team category.
