Tottenham transfers: five to purchase and ten to sell in a striking Upgrade for Ange Postecoglou’s summer

Spurs and Ange Postecoglou may have a very busy summer ahead of them as the Australian attempts to assemble his starting lineup for the 2024–2025 season and beyond. TEAMtalk examines how he might accomplish this.

Despite facing numerous challenges in his first season as manager in north London, Postecoglou has accomplished remarkable things. However, it is immediately evident which players are not compatible with his football philosophy and where he has to make improvements.

In light of this, TT examines 10 players that the friendly Australian should try to let go of (excluding free agents) and five players that should be acquired in order to provide Postecoglou with a much better pool of options right now.

With the addition of the gifted group of young players already working out with the first team, such as Jamie Donley, Dane Scarlett, and Alfie Dorrington, Postecoglou will have a side that is capable of contending for championships.

Tottenham will sell Japhet Tanganga to ten players.

With just a year remaining on his contract, Tanganga will have the opportunity to cash in this summer. He is currently on loan at Millwall, but he has failed to persuade successive Tottenham managers that he is someone worth trusting.

Tanganga, who has been a member of the team since he was ten years old, enjoyed his most successful period under Jose Mourinho. He won’t be missed if he walks on, though, as he hasn’t been able to elevate his game.

Regulon, Sergio

It’s very amazing how much Reguilon has plummeted at Spurs after having a promising beginning to his life in north London.

The Spaniard is now at Brentford after on loan stints at Manchester United and Atletico Madrid. Additionally, his contract expires in 2025, thus there is not much time left to recover any kind of respectable payment for his services.

Djed Spence

The enigma surrounding Djed Spence and the reason he has never really had a chance to persuade managers to give him a chance at right-back?

A player who looks to have what it takes to be a top performance has been the subject of rumors regarding an attitude problem; loans to Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa likely tell their own tale and indicate how this unlikely situation will turn out.

Ryan Sesegnon

Despite joining the squad in 2019, this gifted athlete has only made 57 appearances in the main team.

To be fair, Sessegnon has had a terrible run of injuries and has never been able to compete for a regular starting position.

In light of this, it would be shocking if Spurs did not attempt to let go of the player, however it is unclear how much they will get in exchange for a player who is constantly injured. In the summer of 2025, his contract expires as well.

Joe Rodon

Leeds United’s Joe Rodon

Following Joe Rodon’s loan stint from Tottenham, Leeds wants to keep him.

This is a difficult one because, although appearing like he would have fit in well at Tottenham, Rodon was never given the opportunity he deserved after joining from Swansea in 2020.

The Wales international, who is now thriving on loan at Leeds, is a talented enough player to start regularly for a premier league team rather than being a fourth or fifth choice in north London.

Given that he still has a year remaining on his deal, it makes sense to try and cash in this summer. If Leeds can make it back to the Premier League this year, then they will definitely be interested.

Emile Pierre Hojbjerg

Given that he was connected to departures in January and last summer, he is most certainly the least likely of all the players predicted to depart.

Simply said, Postecoglou’s preferred style of play for his midfielders is not suited for the Dane, who never seems to be at ease holding the ball under duress.

The front-runners for his signature are still Atletico Madrid, and a summer departure seems nearly inevitable.

Oliver J. Skipp

When Tottenham sold Harry Winks to Leicester last summer, they sold the incorrect midfield player—Skipp—instead of the right player.

Skipp lacks the legs to get around the field in the same manner as Winks, therefore his action-packed game is ideal for the mildly mythical “Ange-Ball.”

Additionally, Postecoglou is not using him extensively, so by summer, he might be surplus to needs.

Spurs may potentially be able to recover a respectable sum for the 23-year-old, whose deal expires in 2027.

Ndombele Tanguy

An incredible talent who, it appears, will never reach his full potential at Tottenham or possibly anywhere else.

The club’s final chance to attempt and negotiate a fair price for a player who cost them £55 million in 2019 will be this summer.

Subsequent loans, however, have revealed that no team is prepared to pay him a regular salary since it seems like too big of a risk.

Spurs might even have to fulfill his contract in order to remove him from the records.

Bryan Gil

One another gifted attacker who has never succeeded in the Premier League.

It was always said that Gil needed to get stronger in order to adjust to English football, but that never really happened. With Manor Solomon already playing for Tottenham in his place, it wouldn’t be shocking if Tottenham made cuts in the summer.

Richardson

The player who suffered the most loss on this list in terms of the money Spurs paid for him and the results they received in return.

After spending £60 million to acquire the Brazilian, Daniel Levy was rewarded with three goals in his debut campaign, despite the player serving as Harry Kane’s backup.

Even while Richarlison’s goal total this season—11 in 25 games—has improved significantly, he still has too many bad days and fails to take crucial opportunities that might mean the difference between missing out on Europe or breaking his trophy drought, which currently stands at 16 years.

Because of this, it’s very likely that Tottenham will sign a big-name player to succeed Harry Kane this summer. We will now start discussing ways for Postecoglou to bolster both his starting lineup and his team as a whole.

The five players Jonathan David should cost Tottenham

Ivan Toney of Brentford would be the preferred choice in this situation, but Daniel Levy is unlikely to spend nearly £100 million on a successor for Harry Kane—especially in light of the speculation that the England captain may move back to North London throughout the course of the next two seasons.

David, a striker for Lille, is a good example of that happy medium since he is only 24 years old and still has a lot of room to grow as a player. David would likely cost roughly £43 million.

He has scored 75 goals in 169 games since relocating to France in 2020, but he has previously expressed a wish to play in England.

“I’m not sure if I can find myself anywhere but the Premier League,” David stated in a December 2022 interview with La Voic du Nord.

Postecoglou also adores his ability to play as a No. 9 and get deep for the ball to create attacks.

Conor Gallagher

This is absolutely no mystery at all, as Spurs have been after the interim Chelsea captain ever before rumors circulated that the Blues would probably have to sell some of their own players in order to meet FFP requirements.

The England star’s contract expires in the summer of 2025, thus his future is still out in the air while he isn’t signed to a new one.

This implies that Chelsea would need to sell this summer in order to recover any portion of the £30–£35 million they are seeking for his services.

There’s no denying that Gallagher’s all-action style is ideal for Postecoglou, and the transfer seems inevitable.

Pedro Neto

Richarlison and Gil have both been sold in this model, and Timo Werner will probably be transferred back to RB Leipzig unless he has an incredible season finale. Tottenham will want an attacker, and Neto is a perfect fit.

Rumors that Wolves will cash in on the player this summer are getting stronger, and multiple teams are vying for his services.

But as we recently disclosed, Spurs are ahead of Arsenal, their rivals in north London, in their pursuit of the player.

In Wolves’ recent 2-1 victory over his team, Postecoglou had a first-hand look at Neto’s abilities as the Portugal international demonstrated his devastating speed on the break to set up his team’s victory.

Szymanski Sebastian

The star of Fenerbahce, Sebastian Szymanski

Spurs may raid Fenerbahce in an attempt to sign Sebastian Szymanski.

Hojbjerg and Skipp’s departures free up a spot in Tottenham’s midfield, potentially leading to a move for Szymanski, a star for Fenerbahce.

The Poland international, who had a significant impact in Turkish football, is one of the favorites to move to north London this summer.

Although the offensive midfielder would likely cost around £30 million, he would be a valuable addition to Postecoglou’s team and provide James Maddison instant competition for the starting position.

Walker-Peters, Kyle

Returning the former Tottenham prospect makes a lot of sense, not the least of which being his ability to play both full-back positions and challenge Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie.

Walker-Peters left Spurs in 2020 to sign a £12 million contract with Southampton, but he has since improved greatly.

If Southampton does not win promotion, he is expected to return to the Premier League this summer. Tottenham has a buy-back clause of £30 million in place to ward off suitors like Manchester United and Arsenal.

The 26-year-old would also increase the number of homegrown players, having played with Spurs for 24 games before to relocating to the south coast.
