After day one, Minjee Lee leads after matching the Blue Bay LPGA record round

Making just her second appearance on the LPGA Tour this year, Minjee Lee made seven birdies without missing a shot; the 27-year-old Australian is tied for second place with Miranda Wang, Sarah Schmelzel, and Ruixin Liu.

At the Blue Bay LPGA, Minjee Lee made seven birdies in her first round without missing a shot.

 

Minjee Lee, an Australian, took a one-stroke lead after the first round on Thursday after shooting a seven-under 65, which tied the Blue Bay LPGA single-round scoring record.

 

Lee was incredibly amazing as she made seven birdies without missing a shot in just her second outing on the LPGA Tour this year. After all three players carded 66s in the opening round of the tournament located on the southern Chinese island of Hainan, Sarah Schmelzel, Miranda Wang, and Ruixin Liu are tied for second place.

 

The 27-year-old Lee has extensive knowledge of the Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course. The No. 5 player in the world according to the LPGA rankings triumphed on this course in 2016 and is aiming for her 11th career win.

 

“A few of the holes were different,” Lee reminisced about her eight-year-old victory. “All I can recall is that it was my second year out and I knew nothing.

 

“It was a new event and I came here with no expectations and I had a lot of fun that week.”

 

“I played really solid today,” she continued. I simply tried to take advantage of the favorable circumstances we were in and played shrewd when necessary.”

 

With 20 career victories, including two majors, Lydia Ko is presently three strokes behind the leader and tied for fourth place at four under following an opening 68.

 

Stephanie Meadow of Northern Ireland is at two under, world No. 1 Lilia Vu is at even par, and Celine Boutier, who was defeated by Hannah Green in the final round of the HSBC Women’s World Championship last week, is at one over par following a dismal opening 73.

The 30-year-old Frenchwoman captured four championships in the previous campaign, her first major victory coming from victories in the Women’s Scottish Open and the Evian Championship.

 

Following events in Thailand and Singapore over the previous two weeks, the tournament marks the

third of three straight weeks that the LPGA Tour will be in Asia.
