Carlos Corberan explains Callum Marshall’s position following his loan move to West Brom

Callum Marshall is still developing, according to Carlos Corberan, and his loan stint with West Bromwich Albion isn’t only about minutes. Adolescent Marshall, who was scoring goals for West Ham United’s under-21 team in the early part of the season, came to Albion on loan in January. However, with just three appearances and 54 minutes of play time, he has not been used as a replacement in the previous three games.

After January, Corberan does have a lot of options: Adam Reach has recovered from injury, Tom Fellows has made an impression, Grady Diangana has returned from AFCON, and Mikey Johnston and Andreas Weimann have also made an impact. Suddenly, Corberan faces a selection conundrum each week despite the loss of Daryl Dike due to injury. He still has Brandon Thomas-Asante, Josh Maja, and Matt Phillips to welcome back in the upcoming weeks.

In contrast, Marshall has had to wait his turn. Corberan has liked working with Marshall every day in training, and he believes that Championship minutes aren’t the end all be all of Marshall’s Albion experience, especially with a team that is vying for promotion to the Premier League. Marshall will benefit from just continuing to hone his skills and knowledge in a first-team setting before joining the Irons again in the summer.

“It’s a pity because he’s a player with a lot of good skills and he’s in a position where there is still a lot of growth,” Corberan said. “He is still developing, so he won’t be ready for game action right away. This includes it. There are players among us who were loaned out to teams where we wanted them to play, but they never did.

“Hall Reece. We sent him on loan, and even though he didn’t play, he returned because that experience is important for his development. It promotes growth and maturity in you. You develop when you adjust your resources to meet the needs, not just while you play.

When it came time to participate, some players carried these items with them because they had the experience and had used the time and procedure. Other players still need to develop. For example, you cannot go on your first loan to a club like West Bromwich, which is in a strong position in the league, believing that it is below the 21-level when you are 17, 18, or 19 years old and you enter one level of the Championship.

“He is aware of this. He was quite aware of this, as I recall from the first notes he left in the club; it was a process he needed and wanted to go through. He had six training sessions with the first team at West Ham. The remaining portions involved the 21s. How many players from our under-21 team are on our squad considering they play in the same league as our 21s? We did so just in the cup.

“The Championship is a competition that I greatly admire.” He has participated in three Championships since coming here, in addition to training with the guys all week, which will help him develop every day. You may either watch this or simply count down the minutes that he plays. He still has room to grow, in my opinion, since guys ahead of him will put pressure on his position.

“That’s why the target of the loan is the growing of the player, which he is doing – but the growing isn’t always related with

minutes of the games.”
