Wenham: Spurs’ high-profile acquisition is terminated due to a “very challenging” contract issue

After yet another injury setback, John Wenham, a Tottenham expert, thinks Ryan Sessegnon’s long-term future is away from North London.

Since leaving Fulham for a move of £25 million nearly five years ago, Sessegnon has been beset by ailments (BBC Sport, 8 August 2019).

Since joining the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he has only made 57 appearances, making three goals and dishing out four assists.

Sessegnon underwent his second surgery in a year this week, this time on his right hamstring, after sustaining a muscle injury while playing for Spurs’ Under-21 team on Saturday, February 17. He had made his comeback to action in an FA Cup match against Burnley in early January (via The Independent, 29 February).

Wenham has discussed what he believes the 23-year-old’s long-term future holds in light of this revelation.

Wenham, who spoke exclusively to Tottenham News, stated: “It’s really difficult because last summer, Nottingham Forest and Luton showed interest in Sessegnon.” He ultimately sustained an injury that prevented him from leaving.

Sadly, I don’t think Tottenham is where he should spend the rest of his career. He will have one more summer season left on his deal, so it will all depend on how fit he can get, but Tottenham are in a really challenging situation.

“If he had two years remaining on his contract, Spurs might have sent him on loan to another team for the upcoming campaign to assess his fitness level and determine whether he could play at the highest level.

But since they don’t have that choice, I’m not sure what will happen to him. I predict he will play a big role in the preseason, after which the team can decide what to do with him.

Will Ryan Sessegnon be able to salvage his Tottenham Hotspur Stadium career?

Few individuals will be more irate than Sessegnon himself during the course of his tenure with the Spurs.

It is evident from the fee paid for the then-19-year-old that Tottenham had great expectations for the former England Under-21 player.

It is difficult to identify a player in any European football league who has struggled more than others in recent years with injuries.

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham

The latest Tottenham setback for Ryan Sessegnon will annoy Ange Postecoglou.

It appeared as though Sessegnon was finally going to turn the corner in N17 and get a chance to contribute under Ange Postecoglou after he was recently observed in first-team training.

That, sadly, was not to be, and now the Fulham academy graduate has to recover from yet another disappointment, leaving his long-term prospects somewhat uncertain.

In other Tottenham news, following another injury blow for the team, one Under-21 star has an open door.
