I didn’t consider… A BBC analyst claims that Leeds’ £5 million player was much too deep against Huddersfield today.

At Huddersfield Town today, Leeds United’s nine-game winning streak in the league came to an end.

Despite being reduced to 10 men in stoppage time of the first half due to Jonathan Hogg’s red card, the Whites were held to a 1-1 draw against their West Yorkshire rivals.

Before Patrick Bamford tied the score halfway through the second half, Michal Helik had given Huddersfield the lead. Leeds, however, were unable to get the game-winning goal.

Although pundit Jon Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds that Daniel Farke gave it his all from the bench, he thinks he may have made a mistake with one of his replacements.

Considering the status of the game, Newsome believes that Ilia Gruev was playing much too deep in the second half and that Archie Gray ought to have been kept on following his midweek midfield display.

Says Newsome, Gruev went too far.

He stated: “I didn’t believe Gruev played a terrific game today. He tends to play too deep, and at one point, Rodon and Ampadu were guarding their striker. However, Gruev likes to get the ball off of them by dropping on their toes.

“Go play where you are supposed to play, which is up in the middle of the park. Archie Gray would have probably done that and been a little more inventive for us,” the speaker said.

Connor Roberts, who has had an impact off the bench the past two weeks, was the proper choice to start at right-back. It was his cross that created the equalizer.

Regarding the middle, there are two perspectives to consider. Following the break, Huddersfield hardly had a kick, largely because Leeds’ £5 million player Gruev was able to pick up the loose ball.

Having said that, Newsome is probably correct in that Leeds lacked a true center of gravity and that he was playing far deeper than necessary.
