Alan Shearer responds to the “exclusive” St. James’ Park reveal, which Newcastle United is making today.

The world-exclusive premiere of a re-release of Mark Knopfler’s legendary Going Home (Local Hero) will take place at St. James’ Park this afternoon during Newcastle United’s Premier League matchup with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The song “Local Hero,” which was originally released in 1983, has been re-recorded 41 years later by Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes. This lineup features over 60 musicians, including Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Brian May, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Ronnie Wood, and Geordie royalty Sting and Sam Fender.

Associated with Newcastle United matchdays, the re-recording aims to generate money for Teen Cancer America and Teenage Cancer Trust. And when United takes the field before the match against Wolves, Geordies will get the chance to hear the multi-collaboration for the first time. Mark Knopfler will discuss the recording with guests at pitchside.

On Friday night, St. James’ Park hosted a charity auction, and Newcastle great Alan Shearer was among those in attendance. In response to X, Shearer tweeted: “What an honour that was to sit and ask the legend @MarkKnopfler about his incredible career and the new version of Going Home (Local Hero) that’s out on 15th March and all proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.”

Before the song’s reissue, Knopfler made the following comment: “I want to thank everyone for their wonderful reception above all else. I was genuinely unaware that it would turn out this way. Guy (Fletcher) and I realized early on that this piece needed to be extended in some way to accommodate the large number of participants.

“Pete Townshend had entered my studio carrying a guitar and an amplifier before I did.” And that first power chord that Pete played—man, I tell you. It was simply amazing to be in that territory. And that was the end of it. Eric Clapton entered the stage and performed well, lick after delicious lick. Then came Jeff Beck’s piece, which was captivating. Really, I believe that what we’ve had is an embarrassment of riches. It was a high point all around.”
