General Manager Brad Holmes of the Detroit Lions defends quarterback Jared Goff

General manager Brad Holmes was happy with how the Detroit Lions’ season ended last year, as the team finished 12-5 and advanced to the NFC Championship Game. Jared Goff’s performance at quarterback was one of the key factors in Detroit’s success.

Last season, Goff finished with 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes. Head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson were two major contributors to his success.

General manager of the Detroit Lions Brad Holmes discussed Goff on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit on Wednesday.

“Jared performed admirably, without a doubt, and as a team, we know where we want to go and how to move forward with him and the other players who are qualified for those talks. But we don’t share those discussions outside of respect for the athlete and our procedure. We’ll notify you guys as soon as there are any updates.

Goff, who is 29 years old, has one year left on his deal. What kind of contract extension the Lions grant him will be interesting to watch. This season they earned their first division title in thirty years, in part because of him.

They won the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Rams before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game. Three close games that involved Detroit were played.

Goff’s performance while playing for the Lions was lauded by Campbell. Dan Campbell stayed and informed the media:

Yes, look, I understand; it hasn’t actually happened yet, but people are expressing it. However, I find it incomprehensible considering, for example, the NFC title game. He played a solid game for us, in my opinion. He made that possible for us to win.And I just feel like, man, ever since he’s been here, I’ve watched a quarterback who has developed and improved every year. He’s also improved each year under pressure and has truly just risen to the occasion. And he’s growing more at ease and self-assured.

Detroit would have faced the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the Super Bowl if the Lions had defeated the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. In the first week of the season, Detroit defeated Kansas City 21–20 on the road.

One of the NFC’s top quarterbacks the previous year was Jared Goff. He did make it to the Super Bowl once, with the Los Angeles Rams in the 2019 season, but they were defeated by the New England Patriots. With Goff at quarterback, the Detroit Lions aim to win their first Super Bowl championship in team history.
