“Too costly”: The manager acknowledges that he was hoping to sign Micky Van de Ven before Spurs

According to former Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder, the Eredivisie powerhouses were interested in signing Micky van de Ven in 2022, but the center-back’s cost was prohibitive for the team at the time.

Van de Ven, a centre back who plays for Volendam in the Dutch second division till 2022, has experienced an incredibly quick rise in the last few years.

The centre-back made a significant impression on the scouts at Wolfsburg during his brief tenure in the Bundesliga because of his performances for Volendam.

That persuaded Tottenham to part with £43 million in order to get the 22-year-old last summer, and it turned out to be money well spent as the Dutch international had a fantastic Premier League debut.

Cristian Romero and Van van Ven have forged a strong defensive partnership; the Argentinean player even called his center-back partner one of the greatest in the Premier League for his position (The Sun).

As it turns out, Ajax contemplated a serious 2022 move for the Tottenham player before deciding to sign Ahmetcan Kaplan and Calvin Bassey.

According to Voetbal Zone, the club’s previous manager Schreuder stated to Voetbal International, “At the time, we were not in possession of any other options.” For instance, Micky van de Ven caught our attention, but his price proved to be prohibitive.

Spurs Views

Van de Ven has publicly stated that he was an Ajax supporter. Thus, it stands to reason that the centre back would have been excited about moving to Johan Cruyff Arena.

But given how his career has developed since moving to Germany, the 22-year-old is now relieved that his move to Ajax did not work out.
