“So much promise” Archie Gray, a BBC analyst, is another intriguing young talent coming through for Leeds.

Even though Leeds United lost 3-2 to Chelsea, the young players showed great leadership that evening.

A significantly altered Conor Gallagher’s goal in the ninetieth minute was the only thing separating Leeds and their Premier League rivals as they went to Stamford Bridge in the hopes of pulling off an unexpected cup surprise.

Archie Gray was the bright spot for both teams and was named Man of the Match by ITV, although Leeds supporters won’t be too shocked by his performance given his season.

Mateo Joseph, however, also made a significant contribution to the Whites, scoring his first goals for the team in a performance that marked the 20-year-old’s coming of age.

After the game, pundit Jon Newsome of BBC Radio Leeds praised Joseph’s performance and said he had a lot of potential to be a long-term fixture at Elland Road, much like Gray.

Newsome says Joseph has a lot of promise.

“I thought he did excellent, isn’t that his role?” he remarked. Not a 10, as you can see from his play style, game, and physique. He enjoys running in the channels and getting up against center backs. I think he has a lot of potential, but he still has a lot to learn about the game.

“The more games he can play like tonight, the better he will get, and he must be sitting in the dressing room believing that he is good enough and belongs at this level.”

That would have been a persistent doubt in his mind, but all of a sudden he comes here and destroys a great Premier League and European club with a handful of goals. Suddenly, he has more confidence, will be putting his chest out more, and has a bounce in his step.

Despite the difficulty in obtaining league minutes this season, Joseph showed last night why Leeds gave him a new long-term contract shortly after Gray.

After yesterday night’s match, Joseph talked about how much he and Gray have changed in only a few years, and he hopes that this is the beginning of a long career at Leeds.

His next task is to attempt to get into that Championship starting XI, and judging by the performance last night, he might have surpassed Joel Piroe.
