In the wake of allegations about LIV Golf, Brooks Koepka admits that Rory McIlroy will be hated by some

According to Brooks Koepka, if he had to spend the rest of his professional golf career playing with just one other professional, he would choose PGA Tour competitor Rory McIlroy.

In recent years, Koepka and McIlroy have emerged as the modern-day greats of professional golf. They have a combined total of nine major victories, with Koepka having the advantage with five. The two have faced off against one another numerous times, and it seems that Koepka’s greatest fight of all time is going toe-to-toe with the Northern Irishman.

“Most people will probably hate this answer, but Rory right?” When asked who he would choose to play with for the rest of his life, Koepka answered to Golf.com.

“There is a competition, maybe he’s not that way or not, but I have one more [major championship] than him and then he is going to get to five soon and it is like a one up thing,” the five-time major winner said, revealing the healthy rivalry between himself and McIlroy.

“Where we are in the game, I want to try a little because I think he is undoubtedly one of the best players ever, so it’s just trying to one up. We are the same age, or I think he is a year older. That’s how it is for me, anyway. I want to make sure I can acquire a sizable lead before he starts to close the gap if I show up at a major.”

In the last two years, their rivalry has been more significant off the course than on it as Koepka and McIlroy have found themselves on opposing sides of golf’s civil war. The Northern Irishman swore allegiance to the PGA Tour, but the American star rose to prominence as one of the big players to join the LIV Golf setup.

Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka have a great rivalry.

Even though McIlroy and Koepka are close friends, McIlroy emerged as one of the league’s harshest opponents, attacking the Saudi-backed league’s development and ascent in tandem with the PGA Tour. However, in recent months, the four-time major champion has made a dramatic about face and changed his position on the breakaway league.

Based on this, Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, McIlroy’s former agent, thinks it may lead to the European Ryder Cup star making an unexpected transfer to the mega-money league. “If one were to be cynical, one could argue that he will sign a contract with LIV for approximately £750 million in less than a month, as he is creating the impression that LIV is now okay, even though it wasn’t,” Chandler said to Bunkered.

“Who knows? Although he doesn’t require £750 million, his actions are strange, therefore it’s a possibility.I’m not sure if he does it or not, but most men can do it if [Jon] Rahm can.” The agent speculated, “I think number one, there’s a 10% possibility he’s favoring his way to sign for LIV, but he realises that the whole bickering and fighting is no good for golf.” He then calculated the likelihood that his former client would decide to move to Saudi Arabia.
