Paul Merson’s erroneous and ‘bordering on frightening’ tirade about West Ham is simply wrong

Paul Merson’s erroneous and ‘bordering on frightening’ tirade about West Ham is simply wrong.

Paul Merson has once again absolutely missed the mark with his terribly misplaced tirade directed at West Ham United.

Even though David Moyes is currently facing a lot of pressure in his capacity as West Ham manager, the board is not yet prepared to fire him and they also won’t be offering him a new contract anytime soon.

Like many other experts, Paul Merson appears to have entirely missed the fact that we are experiencing such a bad run of form.

Since December 28th, West Ham has lost all of its games across all competitions, and in that time, we have only managed one goal in open play.

Merson simply doesn’t get how this is the West Ham that Moyes has built as a team, even if the Hammers are actually playing at sixes and sevens right now.

Paul Merson’s tirade against West Ham is completely incorrect.

Paul Merson’s tirade against West Ham is completely incorrect.

The well-known analyst was discussing the present state of affairs at West Ham on Sky Sports News.

And Merson revealed why he was taken aback by the two modifications Moyes made for the Forest game:

I’m shocked that he changed. I had assumed that he would just play for the same squad and tell them to “get on with it.” “You save yourselves from difficulties.” He was let down by them [against Arsenal]. The team was not led by David Moyes. A portion of the choices made were almost stunning. You don’t expect to be finished at set plays, West Ham teams. They were flawed in every way. There will be Forest supporters at this game who will proclaim, “It’s West Ham, we’ll win this game.” It’s a challenging game. The supporters will show up, but Forest faces a challenging match. David Moyes and West Ham will make sure this team is prepared.

This is a really ignorant and naive statement from Merson, and he made it following our defeat to Arsenal the previous week!

First, the two modifications from the Scot were the absolute least that were required. In my opinion, I also would have dropped Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma.

Second, this is EXACTLY how Moyes’ West Ham team appears. The Scot says we’re not as flimsy as we once were, but I believe we still are.

In 25 Premier League games so far this season, we have let in 44 goals. That record is just not good enough for a manager who takes great value in defensive unity.

It’s also past time for Merson and other commentators to realize that, under Moyes, we’re a simple team to play against following his misdirected tirade against West Ham.
