Martin Brundle responds sharply to remarks made by Lewis Hamilton regarding his last season at Mercedes

Martin Brundle, a former Formula One driver and current Sky Sports pundit, responded to remarks made by Lewis Hamilton regarding his choice to go from Mercedes to Ferrari.

The seven-time world champion has signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari to take Carlos Sainz’s spot starting in 2025, meaning that this will be his final season with the Silver Arrows.

As a result, he will be ending a relationship with Mercedes that stretches back more than 25 years, to the time the German automaker owned stock in Hamilton’s previous squad, McLaren, during his junior driving career.

Hamilton has already made two public comments on his decision: one last week at Mercedes’ 2024 vehicle launch, and the other in a social media post.

The 39-year-old claimed on social media that the decision to make the move was “the hardest I’ve ever had to make” and that it was “filled with a whole range of emotions.”

However, Hamilton went on, saying that by joining Ferrari, he was “fulfilling a childhood dream” and will be partnered with Charles Leclerc.

Brundle gave a direct evaluation of Hamilton’s remarks on the Sky Sports F1 podcast on Friday. He feels the decision was not as tough as his fellow Brit suggests.

“I don’t buy all this, ‘It’s going to be an emotional leaving,” he exclaimed.

“Lewis wants to win because he is a winning machine. It’s a good contract; he’ll get paid well, receive plenty of love, and in 2025, it will be one of the biggest tales in international sports.”

Regarding Hamilton’s contract situation, Brundle continued, “The teams are slightly disingenuous when they tell you about new contract signings, because they only tell you edited highlights that suit them.” Hamilton chose not to activate a previously announced year’s extension in his Mercedes deal, which would have taken him into 2025.

“It is obvious that they neglected to include Hamilton’s escape clause, which he has decided to exercise very early on.

“It appears that this is a chance for everyone. George Russell possesses the brilliance, talent, self-assurance, and quickness to take the lead and become the best driver. That is beyond doubt in my mind.

“I believe that losing Lewis will energize Mercedes and provide them with a chance to move quickly and then reflect later. They can hold out and observe [about Hamilton’s successor]. Why must they jump at this time?

“It will excite Charles Leclerc, Ferrari, and us spectators alike. Really, I don’t see any drawbacks there.”
