Left in 2019: The £8 million sale of a Spurs failure is now outperforming Richarlison & Son, according to opinion

With Harry Kane at the top of the pitch, Tottenham Hotspur haven’t had to worry about goals in recent years.

But, the 30-year-old’s £82 million departure from the team to join Bayern Munich last summer left new manager Ange Postecoglou with a significant hole to fill in the final third.

In an attempt to distribute the goals throughout the front line and relieve pressure on Brennan Johnson, who is a winger for Nottingham Forest, the club spent an extravagant £47.5 million on him. Johnson was hoping to fill the shoes of clinical striker Harry Kane.

Although Kane’s exit from North London made necessary investments in other parts of the field possible, it was always going to be a question of whether the club would miss his incredible goal scoring record.

The striker amassed an incredible 213 goals in his 430 outings for Spurs, making him the club’s all-time greatest scorer. This season, Postecoglou’s team has used players like Richarlison and Heung-min Son frequently up front, but have they overlooked a former striker who has performed well this year?

The tenure of Vincent Janssen at Tottenham Hotspur

In the summer of 2016, Dutch striker Vincent Janssen, who had scored 32 goals in 49 games for Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar, was signed by Spurs for a reported fee of around £17 million.

After his time in the Netherlands, the forward showed great promise when he joined the team. But his time in north London was an absolute disaster.

During his tenure with Spurs, Janssen made 42 appearances and scored six goals. However, it took him eight months to score his first goal on open play after joining White Hart Lane in March 2017.

In an attempt to regain his goal-scoring form, he later signed a loan with Fenerbache for the 2017–18 season. However, the move proved fruitless, as Janssen missed the majority of the season due to injury.

After his loan stint in Turkey, he played as a substitute for Spurs just a few times before finalizing a permanent transfer to join Monterrey in Mexico for £8 million in the summer of 2019.

After moving to Royal Antwerp in Belgium in 2022, the now 29-year-old striker began to show off his skills and make an impression.

With 35 appearances this season alone, the Dutch striker has scored 16 goals, placing him among the top 10 scorers in the nation thus far.

Janssen significantly outscores Richarlison and Heung-min Son, two current Tottenham forwards, in terms of goals scored overall during the 2023–2024 season.

Postecoglou, Son, Richardson, Spurs, Premier League

Richarlison’s total of 11 goals this season puts him five goals behind Janssen, despite the Brazilian’s beginning to justify the £50 million the club spent on him.

Since Kane left Spurs, Son has scored the most goals of any player; under Postecoglou, the South Korean has netted 12 goals.

Even though the Belgian Pro League is clearly easier than the Premier League, Janssen is proving to Spurs that they are missing out on something by trading for him.

Even if Janssen wasn’t a starter under Postecoglou, his recent goal scoring record shows that he still has a lot of skills that the Greek-Aussie might have used.
