Daniel Farke says Leeds United have a player in ‘fantastic’ form, yet to prove himself long-term

Daniel Farke has got the best out of a number of Leeds United players this season as the Whites continue to push for a place in the top two – and Archie Gray certainly falls under that category.

Still yet to turn 18, Gray is well on his way to completing a huge 50 appearances in all competitions for Leeds this season. Already, he’s played 34 games for the club – with 15 league games still left to play.

Not only that, but an FA Cup clash against Chelsea – and the potential of play-offs, or a Cup run. It highlights just how crucial a part of this Leeds side he has become, at right-back or in central midfield.

The England U20 man has of course signed a new deal after attracting plenty of interest – and Farke, in an interview with Sky Sports, was effusive in his praise. But, was keen to point out, it’s only a start.

Farke did state just how mature and level-headed the Leeds academy product has been since he made his debut at the start of the season – with Gray even laying on an assist last time out, at Swansea.

“You can work with a player, but we can only bring him to the door and he has to make that step through it. How he’s done that, with the maturity and consistency he has, is outstanding for a 17-year-old.

“Still unbelievably grounded, humble and has good habits. That is so crucial that you don’t get over the moon. It is so far, so good. But quality is always defined over the long term, and he has to keep going.

“I’ve worked throughout my career with fantastic young players. The experience in his family helps a lot, and I have to give many compliments to the Gray family. They are doing fantastically well with him.”

It is easy to forget his age sometimes – when watching Gray, as pointed out by Jon Newsome this week. He is sensational. His footballing IQ is up there with players that have played a decade more than him.

His long-term future is at Elland Road – but Leeds will only keep him for more than the next two or three years if they can match his ambitions and that is starting with a promotion to the Premier League.
