£103 million plus lost: Pochettino suffered through a catastrophic Spurs error with a “expensive” failure – view

Spurs supported Ange Postecoglou during the summer transfer window as they added several players to bolster their roster.

With a number of those recruits, including James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Guglielmo Vicario, who have all had a significant impact on the Australian head coach, they currently seem to have found their groove.

Spurs haven’t always made the correct decisions, though, when they’ve entered the market to spend big money on new players. One example of their numerous failings over the years is Davinson Sanchez, whose value fell by £29 million while he was a member of the team.

The acquisition of Tanguy Ndombele, a central midfielder who is still under contract with the team, from Lyon in the summer of 2019 was another transaction that Tottenham botched.

The amount Spurs spent on Ndombele

In an effort to bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, Spurs reportedly paid a stunning club record amount of £63 million to sign the French wizard from the Ligue 1 outfit.

Though he made 21 Premier League games in 2019–20 with 12 starts, he was unable to establish himself as a regular starter for the Argentine head coach at first.

That was to change, though, as Ndombele made a significant contribution to Tottenham’s success the next season, starting 28 of his 33 league games and providing two assists and three goals from midfield.

It is understandable that supporters believed that his breakthrough performance that year would provide him with a springboard to advance as a Spurs player, but that was not the case.

In the first half of the 2021–2022 season, the French flop—which former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton called “expensive”—only started six league games before returning to Lyon for the final six months of the campaign on loan.

What is the overall cost of Ndombele to the Spurs?

Spurs have already paid a staggering amount of money for the signing—a whopping £63 million—but they still have to pay his outrageous salaries, which adds to the amount of money the signing has cost the team.

He reportedly earns £200k a week, or roughly £10.4 million a season. As a result, the Lilywhites paid him £20.8 million in salaries over his first two seasons in England and a further £5.2 million during the first half of the 2021–2022 season.

The player had to pay the difference between what the two clubs were ready to do, so it’s unclear exactly how much Lyon contributed to his salary when they brought him back on loan. Lyon paid a price of £1.2 million for that short-term arrangement.

Following that, the France international was loaned to Serie A team Napoli for the 2022–2023 season; the Italian team paid only €3.5 million (£3 million) of his £10.4 million wage.

This meant that by the end of the previous season, Spurs still needed to spend £7.4 million on wages for the central midfield player, bringing the total to £95.2 million including wages and transfer cost (minus £1.2 million for Lyon’s loan payment).

Last summer, Ndombele was loaned out once more when Galatasaray, a Turkish powerhouse, made a move for him and agreed to pay €3.1 million (£2.6 million) of his salary.

He is still under contract through the end of the next season, therefore Tottenham will only be paying £7.8 million of his wage at the end of 2023–2024.

Consequently, Ndombele will have cost the team at least £103 million by the summer when the transfer fee and salaries are added together, as it is still unknown how much his loan with Lyon was worth.

That amount could go up because there’s no assurance they’ll be able to get rid of him permanently to avoid having to pay the £10.4 million that’s owed in the last year of his contract.

The signing of the French midfielder back in 2019 was a costly error for Pochettino and Daniel Levy, as seen by the money spent for just one season of consistent starts in nearly five years.
