Tottenham Hotspur are set to complete the £8.5 million signing of Lucas Bergvall with Djurgardens’ sporting director ‘extremely proud’ of the work both the player and the Swedish outfit have done getting the midfielder to this point.

13 months after joining Djurgardens as a 16-year-old prodigy, Lucas Bergvall could become one of – if not the – most expensive export in the history of Sweden’s Allsvenskan.

Bosse Andersson, the Stockholm-based club’s sporting director, would not confirm or deny whether the deal could eventually exceed the £10 million Lazio stumped up for Gustaf Isaksen a few months ago.

But, with HITC Football understanding that Tottenham have succeeded in batting away interest from Barcelona, there is a great deal of pride at the way Bergvall has blossomed at such a rapid rate at the Tele2 Arena.

Tottenham to seal Lucas Bergvall deal

“There has been an incredible amount of speculation, and you have surely noticed the interest,” Andersson tells Fotbollskanalen. “We have had concrete talks with very big clubs in Europe. We will see what happens.

“I am extremely proud of what we have achieved, that the Bergvall family and Lucas have had these choices. It’s good for Djurgardens and it’s good for Swedish football. I’m extremely proud of the discussions we’re having.

“I think you will all be happy and proud if, in the next few weeks, we can announce something.”

The Standard believe that Bergvall’s move to Tottenham could be done, not in a few weeks, but maybe as soon as Friday night. The teenager, who celebrated his 18th birthday this week, is due in North London for a medical.

He will only link up with Ange Postecoglou’s side in the off-season, however, Andersson conforming that Bergvall will continue to play his trade for Djurgardens ‘until the summer’

Spurs fight off Barcelona

It is no secret that Spanish champions Barcelona are also big admirers of Bergvall. Blaugrana president Joan Laporta, however, insists that a club in such a perilous financial position were never going to blow Tottenham’s offer out the water.

“He is a great player, whom Deco has followed for a long time,” Laporta tells RAC1.

“We made an offer. We had everything agreed with him and the club. (But) Tottenham have made him an offer with much more money.

“Our proposal is to play in the reserve team working with the dynamics of the first team. But we are not going to match Tottenham’s financial offer.”
