Journalist Tom Allnutt claims that under manager Ange Postecoglou, Emerson Royal may not have a long future at Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Allnutt, if the Brazilian full-back wants to stay at Spurs, he might only be able to play backup roles.

Pedro Porro joined the team in January from Sporting Lisbon, and since then, he has established himself as the starting right-back, with Royal relegated to the position of backup.

Due to the club’s injury problems, Royal has recently been given a few starting opportunities; however, his position in the starting lineup is still up in the air.

Ben Davies and Emerson Royal have started in central defense for Postecoglou’s team in their last two games due to the absence of Micky van de Ven and Royal.

But, Royal is anticipated to come back to the bench against West Ham, where Romero is expected to make his suspension return. Davies is probably going to play alongside Romero.

Allnutt thinks that if Royal wants to stay with the North London club, he may have to accept a smaller role as a backup player.

Speaking on The Tottenham Way, Allnutt asserted that Royal may have a limited future at Spurs due to his discomfort playing out of position and the team dynamics.

He declared:

It’s simple to ignore all of their injuries, and you’re correct that Emerson is playing out of position.

Emerson does occasionally appear to be uncomfortable, but that is to be expected—it’s just not his role.

He, for me, doesn’t seem like someone who is here for the long-term under Postecoglou, unless he’s happy to be a back-up.”
